How to calculate wax and fragrance
The total fill weight of a candle equals the container volume. Fragrance oil is measured as a percentage of this total — for example, an 8% fragrance load in an 8oz container means 0.64oz of fragrance oil and 7.36oz of wax. The wax makes up the remaining weight after the fragrance is accounted for.
What is fragrance load?
Fragrance load (also called fragrance percentage) is the ratio of fragrance oil to the total candle weight. Most soy wax candles use 6-10% fragrance load. Higher loads give stronger scent throw but can cause issues like sweating or poor burn quality. Always follow your wax manufacturer's maximum recommended fragrance load.
Common fragrance loads by wax type
| Wax Type | Recommended Range | Max Load |
|---|---|---|
| Soy (464, 444) | 6-10% | 10-12% |
| Paraffin | 6-10% | 10-12% |
| Coconut | 6-8% | 10% |
| Beeswax | 3-6% | 6% |
